Project Proposal
My internship will be at Weaselskin Equestrian Center. Weaselskin is a center where a person can focus on the connection made between them and the horse. Jennifer Thurston runs the center. My mentor is Jennifer Thurston who has worked with horses for most of her life. Jennifer runs the equestrian center. I am excited to learn from her because since she has been around horses for so long she is familiar with the horse business and will be a valuable source in helping me decide if that is where I will want to go with my life.
For my project I am going to create a way for Jennifer to articulate her philosophy in way that is easy to understand and interesting. This will be useful to her because she doesn't always know how to explain her values to everyone and it will give other potential interns a way to understand more of what Weaselskin is about.
To complete my project I am going to research different training techniques so that I can compare and contrast them to Jennifer's ideals and begin visiting Jennifer's farm so that I can begin to get an overall understanding of her work. Before my internship she will also begin to train me in some basic horsemanship, such as driving, leading, etc. When March comes I will have chosen a horse that I want to begin working with. During that month I will work with that horse and develop a connection. Then under Jennifer's supervision I will begin training it. During this time I will be focusing on the connection between the horse and I so that I can talk about how I was able to train him/her through the bond that we built.
I have been quite lucky because I haven't had many difficulties with my internship. But one of my struggles was choosing what I wanted to do because I had so many possibilities. I had thought about working at a marine lab, a zoo, with an interior designer, and many other places. But I was finally able to narrow it down by looking at what I really wanted to do and meeting a couple of my prospective mentors.
My major goal for LINK is to determine whether the horse business is something I want to go into in my future life. By doing this internship Another goal I have is to be able to get in touch with what other people are feeling and this opportunity will help me tremendously because most of it will be about letting go of myself and focusing on another being.
