Poetry Project
For this project we wrote poems about truth, war, peace, or power. I wrote my poem about the truth of time and the different perspectives of it. After we wrote our poem, if we decided not to do a spoken word performance, we had to create a visual piece. We could do anything from paintings to kinetic text videos. I decided to do a Prezi presentation. We then had to write artist statements, and describe our growth as a poet.
Seminars
Genocide Project
In this project we studied a genocide of our choice, then went into depth in a subsubject. I chose the Holodomor (Ukrainian Genocide). I decided to go into depth about resistance, or lack of, in the Holodomor. The Holodomor was a man made famine throughout Ukraine that Stalin orchestrated. Stalin was afraid that the Ukrainians were a threat to his ideal Russia. The grain from Ukraine was sold in the rest of Europe at low prices, this caused the rest of the world to think that there wasn't famine going on in Ukraine. It wasn't until later that other countries attempted to send help, but Stalin denied the famine. Almost 4 million people died from starvation in the winter of 1932-1933. After we did our research we wrote an Op-Ed and then drew a political cartoon that went along with our thesis.
The Truth of War
During our Truth of War project we looked into what the truth of war is for a soldier. At the beginning of the project we read All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque. We then read Slaughterhouse5 by Kurt Vonnegut. After reading the two books we wrote a thesis statement that corresponded with our perspective on the truth of war. Using our perspective statement we wrote an essay that answered the question, "What is the truth of war for a soldier?" Once we wrote our essay we came up with a project that related to our perspective statement. For my project I came up with lyrics to a song and then danced to it.
